Teresinka  Pereira,  Kurt F Svatek,  Joy Rainey   King, B.M.Jackson, Patrick J Sammut, Prof SCDwivedi, Prof Mahendra Bhatnagar, Prof DTKDutta, Mahashweta Chaturvedi,  B.K.Dubey,  Biplab  Majumdar,  Shujaat  Hussain   and  many  others  including   myself   have   evaluated  his  poetry   books  from  various  angles.  Shujaat  Hussain  justifies  his poetic   personality     in  toto:“If  we  go  through  the  quatrains  of  Dr. Arbind,  by  power, theme  and  temperament  he  is  the  most  Arbindian  soul  and  spirit. He  is   Arbindian  in  his  conception, style    and   structure   of  the  kingdom  of  poetry.” His     innovative   Arbindonian    style       will    continue    to   ring   in   the   womb   of   time.  He  has  been   honoured    with   a   number   of   titles – Indian  Keats,  Phrasal  King,    Quatrain   King,  Indian  sonneteer,  Poets’  poet,  bard,  poet  of  the  soul,  editor of  the  editors,   poet   of  the paupers    and    many   others   that   speaks   volumes   about    his    poetic   charismatic   personality.     Excerpts    :

Q.1.NDR: What are the dominant and recurrent themes of your  poems?
AKC: Ecological  disorder, environmental  pollution, emotional   exploitation,  discrimination, suffering, nature, life, love, death, friendship etc  are  the  main  themes  of  my poems. The   capital  idea  of   my   writings   is  to  arouse   literary   sensation  to Tom,  Dick  and   Harry    across   the    globe. The     social   hypocrisy,   exploitation,     deforestation,     dehumanization etc. are   the    main    contents   of   my   creative   world.

Q.2.NDR:What  are  the  reasons  that  cultivated  your  spirit  towards   the  poetic  world?

AKC: Poetry  is  my  passion   and   it   germinates  and  grows   as  naturally  as  the  child   to   a  mother. It  is  the   result   of  the  inner   urges  that  takes    shape  in  black  and   white. The  suffering    society ,  the    paling    pauper  , discrimination, exploitation ,   humiliation ,  emotional   exploitation ,  and    natural    disaster    are  the  things   that    not   only  haunt   my  mind    time   and    again, but  also   stir    to    support   the    deprived     voices    against   these     evil  forces.  Creation   needs    neither     norms    nor     privileges.   It    germinates   every   where   in    all    circumstances .

Q3. NDR: How  do  you  get  inspiration  from  Nature?  What  is  your   philosophy  of  nature? Comment.

AKC: Nature    is    the    universal    code    of     conduct  and   all    human    beings    must    honour     and   embrace  it  for  the  sake   of    better   future  of  our    peeping    generations. It is Nature   that   sends   the   musers    in   the   seventh   heaven  for the   ecological    music   on   this   ailing   earth  where  tempestuous    wind  of    the    materialistic   nebulosity  overwhelms     the    human   beings. The    sun   spins    a    yarn  of    Darwin. The    starry  fays    stirs    the    mays    for   gala days. The    sun    is    the    stallion    while   the   moon    is   the  matron. The    staring   spring,   wintry   cheese, summer’s   honey   breath,   menstrual   flood   etc  are   the   things   that   tickle   my   poetic   heart   for   literary  sensation   in   life. Natural    sanctity    is    the    prime    wealth   of   this  world    and  all  living   beings   are    the   adopted   child   of  nature.

Q.4.NDR: What  is  the  philosophy  of  your  life ?What  is the  ultimate   goal  of  your  poetic  life? Explain in few lines.

AKC : Life   that  is  the   blossomed   flower   is    ever  beautiful  and    fragrant. The    main    motive   of   my   life   is   to   spread  the     message   of   peace,  brotherhood    and    friendship   amidst   all  living    beings   on  this   ailing    earth. Secondly, to   arouse     the     world     through  my  creative   works   is  the  part     and   parcel of   my   life. Thirdly, the   proper  utilization  of   the   precious   time   for   the   sake   of    the  common  masses    is    the    part  of  my   life. Poetry   is   my   passion   in   life. As   a   result   I   try   my   best   to   spread   the   fragrance   of   my   poetic   garden  for Tom, Dick  and  Harry. In a nutshell   I    want   to   see   life    spiritually   prosperous   and   divine   amidst    the  stormy  earthly  winds  blowing  across  the  continent.

Q.5.NDR: What    is  your  philosophy  of  suffering ?Give your   comment   if   any.

AKC :Tribulation  is  a  curse   for  them   who   believe   in   the  carpe  diem  theory. The   treasury  of  the  misery  is  an infantry for  the  corking  time  of  the sophistry. Suffering   is   the   spiritual   vision  of  the saintly  life  for  the  exploration   of   the   new   vistas   of   knowledge. God   is   a   saving   grace   for  those   burning   in   furnace. Struggle   is  life, idleness  is  death.

“Paupers are not the time’s fool,
                          But time’s best jewel.
                          The palmy days of life
Is the felicity of strife.”(My Songs, p.26)

Q6. NDR: What  is   your   concept  of  Love?  Elaborate  it.

AKC :Love    is    the   spiritual   feeling  of   the   living  beings  that    lies    in    pure   heart    and     sound  mind. It  is   the  fragrance    of     life  that  blooms   only   in   perfect   psyche. The     immortal   love   episode    of    Radha    and    Krishna,  Sita  and    Ram,  Laila   and    Majnu,   Heer   and   Rangha   and   many    others    spread   the    fragrance   of   the   love’s   nectar   for   the    generations    next    to    them. Love   is   the    jewel   of    the    amative,   for     the    amative    and    by    the   amative.  It   is   universal    gift   for   all    living    beings    in    general   and     human    beings   in   particular     that    sends    only   in   the    seventh     heaven.   Modern    men    are    deeply    influenced    from      the    power    of    wealth,    money   and   ego.   People   seek   love   in   women,   in    wealth    and    in    sheath    of   the    sword.  Those     human    beings    who    are   really    in    love     love    whole    beings    of    the    earth .  The   climax   of   love    lies  in   spiritual  union   with  the    divine.    The    sensuous    pleasure,   lust    for    wealth,   the    world    of    earth    hunger    and    marriage   try   its    best   to   robe    the   beauty    of      love     on   the    name    of    Love .   Those    who    are   in     love   are   the    most    lucky    men   of    this   world. Here    is    a    rhymed     quatrain     that     spreads   the  fragrance  of    the    spiritual  love.

“ The  incense of  Mary’s sight
Is  a  vital  feelings of  delight
Over  the  fatal  feelings of  delight
For  the  embroidered  Knight.”(Love,p.46)

Q.7. NDR: Whom  do  you  consider  better  capital  idea or  style ?

AKC: Capital   idea   is  the  bride  and   style   is   her   ornaments   that   enhances   the   blooming   beauty     to  its  climax.  Style  is   to   enhance   the  poetic   beauty  of   the   capital    idea   the   poet   implies  in   the  poems. Style   may  change,  but   capital     idea   needs   sensation   rather   than  alteration .

Q. 8. NDR:  What    does   literature   mean   to   you ?  Do   you   think  it   has     relevance    to   our   day to day   lives ?   Does   it   have  anything     to   do   with   all   that   is   happening   around   us.

AKC:  Literature    is     the     call     of     nature     for     the     florescence        of     the    humanity    on   this  strife-stricken  earth.  It     is    to    fire      the    imagination    of     Tom,  Dick   and  Harry     in     general    and     poetry     lovers    in     particular     for     the     divine     message    of     universal     brotherhood      and     tranquility.   Literature    is   the    soul   of    my     fleshy    life    that    keeps    me     ever     in     the     seventh       heaven.        The      poetic     paysage      shapes     the     materialistic    fellows    for    the      spiritual      message    of    the   sages.     It      reflects     not    only    the     ups    and  downs     of     the   day   today   lives    but    also    stirs     the          spirits    for      spiritual     sanctity.   It      is     only     the     literary    world    through    which     the    shaping     spirits      frame      of      minds      of     all     those     suffering     from     viper     thoughts     for     a    counsel     of      perfection.
The    pulp     literature     that    spreads    like   wild   fire   gives    heart      failure    to    the    sensitive    souls.         It    is    also   one  of     the    root    cause    of   the   immorality    of    the     existing     generation     across    the    globe.

Q9. NDR: What  is  the  purpose  of  your  creative  works?

AKC: Creation     unlocks  the  mystery  of  the  universe  that  is the   most   precious   wealth  of  the  society. Creation    goes on  as  naturally  as  the  fragrance  to  the  flower. All  poetical  devices  are  secondary. The intense  joy  that  the creator  enjoys goes over the head of the critic and the general  readers. This ecstasy can be realized, not  expressed  in  black  and  white. To   sooth   the   ailing   hearts   through   the  crack   of   Nature’s   lock   is  the   main  motto   of   my poetry . It  is  clearly  sung  here :

“To   unlock
Nature’s  lock
Is  the  wisecrack
Of  the  flock.”(The Poet,p.12 )

Q10. NDR: How do you comment upon the mythical characters  of  your  poems?

AKC :I  have   gone   through   western   mythical world  in   general and    Greek and    Roman   in   particular. I have been  reading  about   Indian   mythical   and   historical   heroes/heroines   from   my   childhood. The Indian  and  western   mythical   characters    bloom  side   by  side    across   my   poetic   grove. All   these       mythical    characters   enrich   my   poetic   beauty   to  a  great  extent. I   am  indebted  to  all  these   Indian   and  western  classical  writers    who added fuel to my creative  flames  for  the   poetic  perfection  in  life.

Q.11. NDR: How do you rate the present day poetry/ fiction?

AKC : Creative    writings  has  come  of  age  now  a  days  because   Indian   English   poets   in  general   and   novelists    in     particular    have    established   their  credit   at  the global   level   though   they   are   deprived  of   required   privileges   in   comparison    with   their   western    counterparts.  However,    Indian   English   writing   has   to   do   a   lot  for   its   upgradation,   globalization   and   perfection.

Q12.NDR: What  are  the most tormenting things for Indian  English writers?

AKC : Surprisingly   government   aided   statuary   bodies   such  as  The UGC, Sahitya   Academy,  and   many  others   take   little   interest   in   helping   the   peeping   poets/writers   nor   can   they   arrange   proper   platform   for   assessment  of   them.

Q.13.NDR: How  do  you  react   about   North   Eastern  Indian  English   Writers ?

AKC: North- East    India  has   produced  a   galaxy  of  English   writers – Mitra    Phukan ,   Mamang   Dai,    Dhruba  Hazarika, Ananya  S Guha,  Rupanjali   Baruah,  B.R.Barman, Temsula  Ao,  T. Bijay Singh,  Hare  Krishna  Deka,  Bipin  Patsani,    and   many  more.   Penguin,  Rupa , and  Harper  Collins  have   published   many  of  them,  but  they  are  little   known  in  the  popular   psyche  of  the  masses  inside  and  outside  region . Even  North –East  based   Universities  take  little  notice  of  their own   sons/daughters  of  the  soil  so  far  curriculum   is   concerned . North –Eastern    English   Writers   are   the   most   neglected   voices   of   this   region.

Q.14.NDR:Can  you  claim  that  natural  beauty  is  blooming  in  this  N.E. Region ?

AKC: North –Eastern  Region  is  the  heaven  of the  earth  so  far  natural    beauty   is   concerned   that    blooms   beyond   vision. Unfortunately    this    heavenly   land   is   bleeding   due  to  terrorism,   regionalism    and   demographical   disorder .

Q15. NDR: What   is   The   Satra ? What  is  its  significance ?

AKC : The   Satra  is  the  pious  place  for   Vaishnavite   cult   and   centre   of  wisdom   in  Assam   in  general  and  Majuli  in  particular. To   propagate   the   message of   universal   brotherhood   amidst   all    living   beings  of  this  planet    is  the   message   of   all   Satras. It   is   mandatory   for   all   living   Bhagats (monks)  to  remain  ever  bachelor  so  long  they  are  in the   Satras.   However    there   are   few   Satras    that   allow   the   Bhagats   to   do   double   duty    at  a  time. It   is   also   memorable     that       nuns    ( female priests)   are  not  allowed  to  observe  their   duties  as  the  nuns   in   the   Satras.

Q16.NDR: Quote  a  quatrain  that   brings  out  your  autobiographical   materials?

AKC: ‘The   Ganga’   is   one   of   my    best     autobiographical   poems.  Here   is   an   autobiographical   quatrain:

“The Ganga's odour
Is a good humour
For the Vidur
Of  Sirajpur.”(Nature Poems,p.23)

Q.17. NDR: Some  critics  call  you  Indian  Keats? How  can  you  justify  it ?

AKC: I   am   neither   critics’s   critic   nor   Indian   Keats.    Romantic    elements  in  general  and  Keats’  in   particular   run   throughout   my  poetic  veins  that  makes   my  poems  fragrant  worldwide.   My   poetic   heart  lies   in   romantic   rather   than  classical   world.

Q18. NDR: Some   critics   call   you   a   phrasal   king  in  English  poetry. Give  an  example  if  any:
AKC:  I   have   nothing   to   do   with   phrasal   king   or   queen.   But   the   phrasal   words   are   found   in   plenty   across   my   poetic   works   besides   compound,   explored,  proverbial   and   mythical   words. Here  is a  quatrain  in  which  three  phrases  are  wreathed  artistically.

 “The  fancy  work
Is a high water  mark
For the donkey work
Of the shirk.”(Love,p.20)

Q.19. NDR: Do   you   have   a   specific   writing   style?   What   is   your   innovative   style ? Give  an  example  of  it.

AKC: Rhymed   verse   is   my   favorite   poetic   style. However,   you   can   find   many   of   my   poems   in   free   verse   too.  Apart   from   rhymed   verses   there   are   a   number   of   other   poetic   qualities  such   as   plenty   of   the   phrasal  words, and   the    proverbial    sentences,   mythical     blending,   compound   words   and   many   others   all   through   my   poetic   grove. To   maintain   the     ascending   order  of   the   alphabets   in   a    stanza  is   my  innovative  racy   style   across  my  poetic   works.

                          “The   liven  moon
                         Is   the  noon
                         For   the  osculation
                         Of   the   helion.”     (Nature,P.23)

The    ascending  order  of  l  (liven)-m  (moon)-n (noon)-o (osculation)  in    a    quatrain   is   my    explored      style   to   the  literary   world. Here   is   a   stanza   that    is   quoted    from    ‘The   Poet’ (2011) :

“ The  enigma, facetiae  and  genre
   Heal  the  infidel’s conjecture
  That  enrich  the  oeuvre
Of  the  father- figure.” (The Poet,p.43)

One   can   find   the   sequence  of  the  alphabet-  e, f, g, h and I  in  a   single   stanza   besides   the   rhymed   quatrain.

Q.20.NDR: What   has   been   the   response  from  readers  and  reviewers   so  far   to  your   poetry  collections  are  concerned?

AKC: I  got   myself   interviewed    for   21   literary  journals   and   anthologies   besides   more   than   100  criticisms    and   reviews   published  on my  poems   in   journals,  books, websites   and   anthologies   by    prominent   poets,  professors,   philosophers   and   critics.  Is   it   good  or  no?  I  do  not   know.

Q.21.NDR:As a writer, do you  see  yourself  belonging to some  tradition ?
AKC :Creation  rarely  invites  categorization or  literary  similarity  nor  is  it  mandatory to be  in the  line  of  some   traditions / movements  of  writings.  Majority of  my  poems  are in  meter, but  few  of  them  are  also  in  free-verse.  I   don’t  want   to  be  the  mere   puppets  of   the  writers  writing  in  any  styles  now  a days.
However   I   leave  the  answer  of  this  question  for   the  critics  who  will  go  through   all  my  works  and  will  assess   of   belonging   if  any.

Q.22.NDR:How  do  you  paint  the  contemporary    political   scenario ? How  much  do  you  expect from   them  for  literary   prosperity?

AKC: You  can  take  an  example  of  our  modern  leader who  is  the product   of  caste,  creed  and  compromise. Everyone  can  enjoy  his/her caricature described in my poem  ‘Leader’. What  can one expect  more  from  such  sorts  of  people?

A wolf in sheep’s clothing
Sheds crocodile tears for the  suffering.
O Blood sucker of the sufferer!
Your name is Leader.(My Songs,p.18)

Q.24.NDR: Do  you  have  any  advice  for  other  writers?

AKC: The    writers   are   expected   to   be   impersonal   while   dealing   with   the    subjects   and   harsh   critical    comments.   They   must   be   true   to   their   inordinate   passion   of   writing.  Ignore   comments    of   those   who  lack   proficiency   in   their    respective    fields.   Be    voracious    reader    and    highly   sensitive. Fortune   will    embrace    your poetic    potion;   if   writing   becomes   your   passion   rather  than   profession.

ATOMIC BOMB NEVER AGAIN! 68 years after, 2013

Flames, fire and smoked mushroom
in space, on earth, in water!
It was like the end of the world
for 220 thousand Japanese killed
and millions more
with life time radiation injuries.
A bloodied star exploded
over innocent people
for the lack of humanity
of the elected administration
of a country* as the way
to win power over all the world.
Now the remorse and the memory
will hopefully never allow
a bomb to be ignited and
will dig out the roots of hatred
of people against people.
May all human beings
wish that existing bombs and
factories of bombs be eliminated
from the planet...

* President Harry Truman, of the United States,
authorized the use of atom bomb against Japan.
The first atomic bomb was launched in
Hiroshima on August 6th 1945 and the
second in Nagasaki, August 9th 1945.

Intervista mal-kittieb u traduttur Godwin Ellul

Godwin Ellul twieled l-Imtarfa fl-1959. Studja l-Amministrazzjoni Pubblika, in-Negozju u l-Industrija fl-Universitajiet ta’ Malta, ta’ Warwick u ta’ Bradford. Huwa għalliem. Kien viċi-president tal-Għaqda Poeti Maltin u editur ta’ VERSI. Jikteb poeżiji (li xi wħud huma miġburin f’Ilħna ta’ Qalb Imnikkta (2008) u huwa traduttur ta’ xogħlijiet letterarji mill-Malti għall-Ingliż, u minn ilsna barranin għall-Malti.

      1.     Xi tgħid dwar l-importanza tat-traduzzjoni u tal-għarfien t’ilsna differenti llum, anki f’kuntest ta’ Malta fl-Ewropa? Xi rwol għandhom l-ilsien Malti u anki l-letteratura Maltija f’rabta ma’ dan kollu?

It-traduzzjoni hija mezz importanti kif letteraturi jistgħu jitkellmu ma’ xulxin u kif qarrejja differenti jistgħu jgawdu mil-letteraturi internazzjonali nkluża dik Maltija. Mingħajr it-traduzzjoni ħafna letteratura tista’ tibqa’ moħbija u ma titgawdiex minn popli differenti. Aħna hawn Malta anke jekk gżira nazzjon ċkejken għandna l-ilsien tagħna u anke jekk dan illum qed ikun studjat saħansitra mill-barranin għadu mhux magħruf minn bosta u għalhekk it-traduzzjoni tiftaħ tieqa biex il-letteratura sabiħa tagħna tkun apprezzata mill-barranin, ukoll f’lingwi li huma aktar mifruxin madwar id-dinja, bħall-Ingliż. Il-Gvern illum ukoll irrikonoxxa dan il-fenominu meta warrab fondi għal dan l-iskop. Dan pereżempju kien il-ħsieb tiegħi meta qlibt għall-Ingliż l-istejjer qosra ta’ Sir Temi Zammit (The Collected Short Stories of Sir Temi Zammit), Is-Salib tal-Fidda (The Silver Crucifix) ta’ Patri Wistin Born u Selina (Selina) rumanz ta’ J.J. Camilleri.

Madanakollu dan huwa proċess wieħed għax ovvjament hemm letteratura barranija ta’ livell mondjali li mhix preżenti fil-letteratura tagħna. Kellna awturi Maltin ukoll li kitbu f’ lingwi oħrajn, bħal per eżempju t-Taljan u l-Ingliż, u li x-xogħol tagħhom kien jistħoqqlu jkun f’ilsienna wkoll, bħal per eżempju, l-awtobijografija ta’ Sir Arturo Mercieca (Il-Mixja ta’ Ħajti). Storja b’dettalji storiċi uniċi li jkomplu jżidu t-tagħrif tagħna fuq dak kollu li Malta u niesha għaddew minnu dawk iż-żminijiet.

Kif jidher, dan kollu jieħu dimensjoni importanti fi ħdan Malta Ewropea fejn il-Ġnus saru nazzjon wieħed filwaqt li kull wieħed baqa’ jżomm l-identità partikolari tiegħu. Għaldaqstant l-għarfien ta’ ilsna differenti biex ikun jista’ jsir dan ix-xogħol huwa importanti wkoll. Iżda tajjeb li wieħed jgħid li biex issir it-traduzzjoni dak li jkun mhux biss irid ikun jaf il-lingwa imma mkisser f’dik il-lingwa li jkun qed jittrasporta lejha u dan minħabba l-użu ta’ kliem kif użat minn nies tal-post, kif ukoll l-idjomi. L-użu tad-dizzjunarji għandu rwol importanti wkoll. Hawn ma nistax ma nsemmix ix-xogħol kolossali tal-Profs. Gużè Aquilina. Frankament ma nafx x’konna nagħmlu mingħajr ix-xogħol ta’ Erin Serracino-Inglott u Gużè Aquilna.

    2.     Kif tirrikonċilja l-attività tiegħek ta’ għalliem ma’ dik ta’ traduttur u poeta  u/jew liema jistgħu jkunu l-punti ta’ kuntatt bejn il-qasam tat-tagħlim u dak tat-traduzzjoni u tal-poeżija?

Nibda biex ngħid li l-letteratura hija dimensjoni li tħaddan varjetà immensa tal-ħajja. Il-letteratura mhux biss tedukak imma wkoll timmaturak. Dak kollu li int titgħallem mill-qari tal-letteratura huwa dejjem utli biex tapplikah fil-ħajja ta’ kuljum. Din hija r-relazzjoni li nara - illi mela l-letteratura tagħmlek bniedem aħjar u allura għalliem aħjar.

Irrid ngħid ukoll li t-traduzzjoni, bħall-poeżija, tagħtini wkoll ċertu serħan u ferħ. Imma dik fuq bażi personali aktar milli professjonali.

    3.     Inti għamilt snin twal attiv fi ħdan il-Għaqda Poeti Maltin (anki bħala viċi-president), kont editur tar-rivista VERSI u ktibt ukoll poeżiji bil-Malti u anki bl-Ingliż. Liema huwa l-qasam li jagħtik l-akbar sodisfazzjon minn dawn kollha?

Il-kitba tal-poeżija għalija hija attività importanti. Bħala volum ta’ poeżiji jien forsi b’xorti ħażina ma tantx nikteb poeżiji, mhux għax ma jiġunix versi f’moħħi jew fil-ħsus ta’ qalbi, imma nħossni tqil biex naqbad il-pinna u nniżżel ħsibijiet. Għalhekk b’xorti ħażina, ħafna poeżiji mietu fuq xufftejja. Madanakollu, meta vers jew versi jew ħsibijiet nibqa’ niftakarhom, mela dak huwa mument li ma nistax naħarbu u rrid jew ma rridx ikolli nikteb dawk il-versi. Ħafna drabi mbagħad inħossni kuntent illi ktibthom imma mhux neċessarjamanet li nerġa’ nirrikori għalihom. Iżda dawn il-mumenti uniċi bil-mod il-mod jinġemgħu f’għadd ta’ poeżiji li jista’ jkun ’il quddiem ikunu ppubblikati.

Iż-żmien li jien għamilt kemm bħala viċi-president tal-Għaqda Poeti Malti u anke editur tar-rivista VERSI kien żmien sabiħ u ta’ sfida. Dak ta’ editur huwa xogħol partikolari u interessanti fejn inti tiftaħ tieqa għal ħafna xogħlijiet ta’ awturi differenti biex dawn jitgawdew mill-qarrejja.

    4.     Naf li inti ttraduċejt għall-Malti xogħlijiet letterarji minn ilsna barranin, u qlibt għall-Ingliż xogħlijiet letterarji miktubin oriġinalment bil-Malti. Liema kienu dawn ix-xogħlijiet? Liema kienet dik ix-xintilla li kkonvinċietek tagħżel qabel xejn lilhom u mhux lil xogħlijiet oħrajn, u mbagħad taħdem fuqhom?

Fost ix-xogħlijiet tiegħi wieħed isib Kjaroskur, Is-Salib tal-Fidda, L-istejjer ta’ Sir Temi Zammit, Leli ta’ Ħaż-Żgħir, Selina u Il-Mixja ta’ Ħajti. Kif diġà għidt, it-traduttur irid ikollu xi ħaġa xi jgħid. Ma naħsibx li jeżistu tradutturi li jidħlu għal xi xogħol għax m’ għandhomx xi ħaġa aħjar x’jagħmlu. Kif wieħed jista’ japprezza mill-kotba li semmejt hawn fuq, dawn il-pubblikazzjonijiet huma kollha xogħlijiet klassiċi ta’ awturi magħrufin u li huma importanti fil-letteratura tagħna. L-iskop kien fil-fatt proprju dak li aħna għandna letteratura sabiħa u interessanti u rridu naqsmuha ma’ ħaddieħor biex tkun apprezzata mill-barranin ukoll. Bħal ma aħna naqraw awturi barranin fi lsien li nafu. Min-naħa l-oħra hemm pubblikazzjonijiet li huma miktubin minn awturi Maltin kif diġà semmejt li huma importanti għalina l-Maltin li dak ix-xogħol ikun rrappreżentat fil-letteratura tagħna fi lsienna għax jifforma parti mill-istorja tagħna.

    5.     It-traduttur veru hu dak li mhux biss jittraduċi mill-ilsien oriġinali għal ieħor, imma anki dak li jagħmel ir-riċerka neċessarja dwar ix-xogħol li jkun se jaħdem fuqu qabel ma jibda t-traduzzjoni. Kemm taqbel ma’ dan?

Iva, jien naħseb li huwa importanti tkun taf fuq ix-xogħol li wieħed jidħol għalih. Ħafna drabi x-xogħol minnu nnifsu jqabbdek kurżità u jġiegħlek tfittex u tkun taf aktar fuq is-suġġett, l-awtur, l-epoka u l-bqija. It-traduttur mhux magna,  huwa bniedem li jrid jagħti l-letteratura l-ewwel post u li fl-aħħar it-traduzzjoni minnha nfisha tkun xogħol letterarju indipendenti li wieħed jieħu gost jaqra. It-traduzzjoni jrid ikollha ruħ. Jien ma nemminx fi traduzzjoni  mekkanika. Importanti li qalb it-traduttur tkun f’dak ix-xogħol li jkun qed jagħmel. Kemm ix-xogħol kif ukoll it-traduzzjoni iridu jkunu ta’ valur u li int tkun sodisfatt bihom.

    6.     Dwar il-poeżjija tiegħek: inti tippreferi fuq kollox is-sempliċità fuq livell ta’ lessiku u xbieha, jew int favur il-poeżija ermetika li tinftiehem mill-ftit? Għaliex dan?

Jien nemmen f’poeżija universali. Il-kliem li nuża huwa apposta sempliċi  u nemmen li aktar ma jkun sempliċi fuq temi ċkejknin li kulħadd jista’ jarahom u jmisshom aktar aħjar. Il-gwaj huwa li dawn l-affarijiet il-ħin kollu jdawruna u aħna tant aħna aljenati li ma nagħtux kashom. Mela l-poeżija tiegħi tfittex li tikxef dawn it-teżori moħbijin imma li fil-fatt huma fil-qabda ta’ kulħadd. Dan l-aħħar bl-elezzjoni tal-Papa l-ġdida Franġisku reġgħet telgħet fil-wiċċ il-filosofija Franġiskana. X’għamel lil San Franġisk kbir? Is-sempliċità, ix-xejn. Dak li kien jara Franġisku u dak li għadna naraw illum għadu jarah kulħadd però mhux kulħadd jidħol fil-qalb tal-misteru tas-sempliċità. Is-soluzzjoni tinsab f’idejna u ma nafux.

Jien naħseb li l-poeżija li ma tiftihemx mhix poeżija. Il-poeżija qiegħda hemm biex tiftiehem anke jekk tinbet mill-qigħan kkumplikati tal-qalb, tar-ruħ u tal-moħħ. Poeżija li ma tiftihemx ma tistax tillumina, ma timlikx. Jista’ jkun li ġġiegħlek tistaqsi ħafna mistoqsijiet imma hekk ukoll is-sempliċità u l-universalità tal-poeżija.

    7.     X’jagħmel Godwin Ellul waqt il-ħin liberu tiegħu meta ma jkunx qed jikteb? Kif tiddeskrivi lilek innifsek bħala bniedem?

Jien pjuttost bniedem li ma nfittixx il-folla. Inħobb immur passiġġata fil-ftit kampanja li fadlilna, l-aktar ħdejn il-baħar. Il-baħar isaħħarni. Il-kulur kaħlani tiegħu, il-qilla u s-saħħa tiegħu jħalluni niskanta lejh. Inkun naf li m’inix qiegħed id-dar meta nkun ħdejn il-baħar. Il-qari ovvjament huwa passatemp ieħor tiegħi li jirrillassani.

8. Xi proġetti għall-ġejjieni?

Bħalissa qed naħdem fuq ir-rumanz Piccolo Mondo Antico ta’ A. Fogazzaro. Rumanz mill-isbaħ, maħdum b’reqqa kbira u bi storja intensa b’ħafna stejjer ta’ mħabba, storja, politika, u għira li jitwaħħdu f’xulxin sabiex iżommu l-istorja tal-qarrej ħajja. Il-ktieb mistenni li joħroġ jew lejn l-aħħar ta’ din is-sena jew il-bidu tas-sena d-dieħla.

A poem by Zacharoula Gaitanaki

          GREECE

For  you,  my country, I’ll be proud for ever,
I have inside me a deep grief and a fervent wish.
I feel sorry for the glorious past that declines,
I feel sad for the present and the bad that leaves behind.

Your immortal monuments are not covered with dust ,
they are not destroyed by the earthquakes the chill doesn’t bother them.
Sounio, the Acropolis, your ancient theatres,
sing your glories and your achievements.

Your green mountains, your beautiful islands,
your helmets, your temples, your perfect beauty,
they have, my sweet country, the blessing of God,
the eternal light and joy, the perfect harmony.

Reflections of the sun on your blue waters,
the light of the moon on your holy grounds,
something of the mysteries, attractive, they reflect,
the dreams are like small boats that they are sailing the Aegean Sea.

My Greece, all through I can’t have enough of your light
and near the waters of your springs I relax a little.
Like a migrant bird I would like to go all over you,
singing, my country.

But my verses are poor to portray you,
they are unable to make the painting of your beauty.
You encourage my soul, you dismiss all of my pains,
walking on my heart’s road, I meet you.

Spiros K. Karamountzos’ poems - a selection

English translation by Zacharoula Gaitanaki
                                      zgaitanaki@yahoo.gr

WHEN POETRY BECOMES A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN
               OPEN TO ALL THE PEOPLE…

“Blessed poet,  /  now and for ever, /   your garden is in flower,
 your mind creates…”.

SPIROS K. KARAMOUNTZOS is a famous and charismatic Greek poet and writer. His poetry is an open window to the world and all the people. His garden is a beautiful place too. Wandering in it (reading his poem by the same title), we can see a lot of trees and flowers: sunflowers, basils,  carnations, geraniums, dahlia, violets, daisies, chrysanthemums, cyclamens, pomegranate trees, roses, vines, fir trees, almond tress, olive trees, walnut trees, fig trees, bay…
“Poet’s garden is a small heaven on earth…”
The harmony of colours in nature calm us, a wealth of words, feelings, memories and pictures gain our estimation. The poet help us to become more profound too. If we want it, of course.
His poetry is pervaded by love for the nature, people and life. The theologian and writer Mr. Antonis Mentes, writes about this: “In the whole of his poetic work, we read poems with personal deposit of heart, a living testimony of love”. We’ll add that his work has a clear orientation in light and life. The big gift of life. The poet has enclosed in a few or more verses, all “the light of words”, a heartbeat, the blossoming of hope, love’s words, the morning dewdrops, a double joy, an intellectual inquiry, a smile, the past and the present…
“POET’S GARDEN” the latest collection of poetry by Spiros K. karamountzos, includes quintessence  of loving poetry and pictures of natural beauty, all priceless of value. His verses are not only a deposit but also a clear proof of an inspired poet and a man of feeling whom it’s worth to know the profundity of his thoughts and his emotions.

THE POET

Now, that you planted on the earth
seeds with your name,
Poet, what else do you want?
Reflect on the harvest time.

  DEWDROPS of LOVE

                                    Tell me “I love you”
with feeling and tone,
nothing else.

Chalice
you can brim over
only with love.

Be, my heart,
only if you are in love.
The fragrance of life.

Your love
is anchorage
for all my life.

At nights, I go for a stroll
on dream-streets
with my star.

                                    Your love is for me
Japanese allspices
before sundown.

                                    Ship’s captain
on the love boat.
With fair wind for ever.

Love street.
At the end there is happiness
for couple of lovers.

                                    Bell’s ring
for me and you.
Let’s kiss.

                                    Love’s words.
Balsam for hearts
in pain.

With your silence
and the sweetness of your eyes,
you told me everything.

                                    Endearments.
                                    Sweetness and spooning
sweet-sounding words.

                                    Moonlit
night  walking
and love’s oaths.

                                    A fragrant rose
full of dewdrops.
A gift of love.

Night of dreams
may it never ends
and the stars fade out.

                                    “Almont-tree street”
with snows and flowers.
One –way street.

Swallow’s chirping…
spring’s song.
A beauty of hearing.

                                    Dewdrops.
Water and ornament,
without… clouds.

With a smile
say “good-morning”.
How much does it cost you?

                                    The chimney
sends a life’s message
with its smoke.

                                    Tears.
                                    Gushes from the eye’s
                                    inexhaustible fountain.

                                    At the seashore,
poets and halcyons
make dreams.

                                    The stallion of poetry
gallops in the mind.
Unbridled.
