MIGRANT LABOR DAY
Teresinka Pereira
Migrants take on their shoulders
a share of poverty and disillusion.
Their so-called American dream
isn't an authentic possibility
through hard work and persistence.
However it used to be
when our ancestors came
to help build this country.
Labor day, taken now
by the ruling class,
is a silent day
of historical mourning.
But workers are still fighting
for their right to work,
for their right to receive
decent wages and respect
for the labor they do.
Today, May 1st 2012,
workers are still trying
to overcome the unjust wall
of migrant segregation
and the label of "illegal"
colored in their skins.
