It is the conviction that
only hope for justice,
and belief in equality and

to patriotic hate.
Someday we will make

Nhar is-Sibt, 31 ta’ Awwissu, l-Għaqda Poeti Maltin tellgħet Lejla ta’ Poeżija u Mużika fil-Ministeru għal Għawdex, fir-Rabat. Is-serata kienet preseduta mill-Ministru għal Għawdex, l-Onor. Anton Refalo. Waqt id-diskors tiegħu l-president tal-Għ.P.M., Charles Magro, qal ukoll li attendenza sabiħa bħal dik tagħmel kuraġġ lill-kumitat bies jerġgħu jittellgħu serati simili fil-ġżira ta’ Għawdex. L-attendenza kienet tajba ħafna u dan seħħ anki bis-saħħa tal-għajnuna tal-kittieb, poeta u rappreżentant għal Għawdex tal-Għaqda Poeti Maltin, Charles Bezzina. Inqraw poeżiji bil-Malti u bl-Ingliż, minn poeti ta’ ġenerazzjonijiet differenti, fosthom ta’ membri onorarji tal-Għ.P.M. bħall-Kelinu Vella Haber, il-Kan. Joe Mejlak, Ġanninu Cremona u l-mibki Marċell Mizzi. Ħadu sehem ukoll il-kantanti Josephine Marie Grima u Rosabel Pavia, il-kitarrist Joe Engerer, u l-flawtista, Charlene Portelli. Waqt is-serata ngħataw ukoll mill-president tal-GħPM plakek ta' tifkira lill-Ministru, lil Charles Bezzina u lill-kantanti u mużicisti li pparteċipaw. Il-kittieb u poeta Għawdxi Charles Bezzina ta lill-Ministru għal Għawdex għadd ta’ kotba minn tiegħu bħala tifkira tal-okkażjoni. Mexxiet il-Lejla, Miriam Ellul. Lucilla Maclaren Spillane’s
collection draws on personal experience. The sixty poems in Lucilla Maclaren Spillane’s collection are
written with a keen eye for detail and draw on her wide range of experiences in
several countries. Some of the poems deal with disabilities, including the
author’s own epilepsy. “I hope that my poems will provoke thought on the
broader implications of disability, on the way others respond to it, and the effect
it can have on a person’s life and that of their relatives and friends,” says
Lucilla. “In poetry we can put into words our most acute thoughts and feelings
and can express them in a concise form. There are many people who sincerely
believe they will never enjoy poetry and I hope that, in publishing this
collection, I may be able to enlighten them and help them to recognize, appreciate and enjoy what I regard as true
poetry””
Lucilla Maclaren Spillane was
born in Oxford, England, of Scottish parentage and now lives in Malta and
Ireland. Her poetry has been described as “simple, effective and sometimes
extremely beautiful.” Her poem, “A Child in Freedom Square,” won first prize in
the 2009 Petersham Festival Poetry Competition. Another Seeing is her first
book of poetry.
Written in traditional form and
with an ear for harmony, her poems are memorable and easy to read. They range
from the deep understanding she shows in “Another Seeing” for the child and the
blind man depicted on the cover of the book, through the beauty of “The Lake”
in Wisconsin, “The Fountain” in Oxford and “Street Lamps” in Malta to the stark
humanity of “The Beggar,” “The Widow” and “A Lonely New Year.” “Lift Off”
re-creates the tension of a Space Shuttle launch; “Dragon” reveals the secret
fears of a child with epilepsy; “No Time to Die” the redemption of an
alcoholic; “Sunday Bells” the frustrations of the writing process; whilst
“Haggis Night” vividly depicts the fabled Hogmanay Hunt for Haggis in the
Highlands of Scotland.
The notes to the poems contained
within this volume give added depth and interest to the poems, explaining how
and where they were inspired and what it was that prompted her to write each of
them. The afterword explores her influences, philosophy and beliefs with regard
to poetry.

A note by Lucilla Maclaren Spillane herself:
1: “Another Seeing” (Petersham, 2009; Malta, 2012) was inspired by the late Dr. Roger Duclaud-Williams at the University of Warwick. He had been blind from the age of eighteen months and I was amazed at the way in which he had overcome this, treating it as an inconvenience, rather than as a disability. He had read Law at Oxford and then, armed only with his white stick, he had roamed the USA on Greyhound buses. When I met him, he was totally at ease, a constructive conversationalist with a puckish sense of humour. He moved around the Warwick campus at will and without a stick or dog and functioned in the Department of Politics as a highly regarded academic, renowned by both his fellow academics and by his students. On reading the poem, Dr David Mervin, author of the Guardian “Other People” obituary for him (23 July, 2012), commented:”Poetry is not really my thing, but this one movingly evokes the spirit of my dear friend.”

tal-festi jinsab riesaq lejn it-tmiem tiegħu.
Naħseb li kellna għadd sabiħ ta’ festi li tgawdew sew mill-poplu
tagħna. Jidher li niesna għadha tħobb u
tgħożż il-festi għax dawn jipprovdu okkażjoni biex il-familja tiltaqa’ madwar
mejda waħda, jiġu fostna ħutna l-emigranti, il-kummerċ jiġġenera xi ftit iktar
mis-soltu u l-ferħ jaħkem ma’ kullimkien.
Il-festi kkuluriti tagħna jinteressaw ukoll lill-barranin li jiġu
jżuruna matul is-sajf u jipprovdu divertiment ieħor barra l-baħar nadif u
ċar. It-treqat jilbsu l-libsa tal-festa
u fil-knisja ma jonqsux il-funzjonijiet sbieħ, mużika melodjuża, tiżjin u mixegħla
u priedki fuq il-patrun jew il-patruna.
F’xi nħawi jsiru wkoll xi wirjiet kif ukoll it-tlielaq tal-bhejjem. In-noti ferrieħa tal-qniepen ukoll jgħinu f’din
l-atmosfera sabiħa flimkien mal-logħob tan-nar tal-art u tal-ajru.
Intant waħda
mill-festi sbieħ li tfeġġ lejn tmiem il-Kalendarju tal-festi hija bla dubju ta’
xejn il-festa ħelwa tal-Bambina, it-twelid tal-Verġni Mbierka, magħrufa wkoll
fostna bħala l-festa tal-Vitorja. ‘Tal-aħħar
ibaħħar’, jgħid il-Malti u allura niesna tiffolla biex tgawdi din il-festa li
nistgħu ngħidu ġġib fi tmiemu l-istaġun tal-festi. Mhux darba u tnejn li t-temp ikun beda
jħawwad xi ftit, imma insomma xi ftit tas-sirda tagħmel tajjeb biex ittaffi
s-sħana tal-marċijiet u x-xorb li niesna tlegleg biex tiffessteġġja
lill-patrun. Il-festa tal-Bambina
titfakkar kemm fix-Xagħra Għawdex kif ukoll f’xi nħawi ta’ Malta u jien illum
beħsiebni nikteb xi ftit versi fl-okkażjoni tal-festa tal-Bambina fil-Mellieħa,
billi dan huwa l-lokal l-iktar qrib tagħna.
Nistqarr is-sewwa ma nistax ngħid li għandi xi partita ħbieb hawnhekk
imma bla dubju għamilt żmien ngħaddi minn hawnhekk kemm domt nistudja għall-għalliem
f’St Michael’s Training College f’Ta’ Ġiorni f’San Ġiljan u hawn għad għandi xi
żewġt iħbieb li konna għalliema flimkien.

il-Feddej. Il-festa tal-Bambina tfakkarna wkoll fiż-żewġ Assedji li minnhom
għaddiet Malta u allura bid-dritt kollu din il-festa hija mlaqqma wkoll bħala
l-Festa tal-Vitorja għaliex kien fit-twelid tal-Bambina, fit-8 ta’ Settembru
1565 li l-Maltin flimkien mal-Kavallieri marru jroddu ħajr lil Ommna Marija
wara li raw jgħibu fuq l-orizzont l-aħħar ġfien tal-Mislem illi kieku seta’
kien ijassarna u jġibna fix-xejn. Kien
ukoll fit-8 ta’ Settembru li kien ġie ffirmat l-armistizju biex tintemm
it-tieni gwerrra (1939-45), wara li pajjiżna kien ġie bbumbardjat u mfarrak
mill-bombi tal-Alleati. U allura bi
dritt kollu din hija btala pubblika. Ħalli nħallu xi ftit mill-Muża tiegħi tagħmel
hawnhekk il-parti tagħha għax ibqgħu ċerti mhux wieħed u tnejn kitbu fuq
il-festa u dak kollu li nsibu marbut magħha kif fil-fatt se naraw ukoll iktar
‘il quddiem f’din il-kitba qasira tiegħi.

iktar ‘l fuq, il-festa tal-Otto Settembre hija wisq kbira u għandha sinjifikat
ferm qawwi fin-nisġa tal-istorja ta’ pajjiżna u allura ma setgħetx tiżgiċċa
mill-attenzjoni tal-kittieba tagħna u sabet postha fil-Letteratura tagħna. Marbuta mal-Assedju l-Kbir, nsibu bosta

Biex tgħid il-għajb ta’ din it-telfa kbira.
Minn dan
ix-xogħol bla dubju joħroġ il-kuraġġ u d-determinazzjoni tal-poplu tagħna matul
il-jiem imwiegħra tal-gwerra imma mill-banda l-oħra dan ma jistax ikun mod
ieħor la darba l-Bambina hija dejjem magħna.
Lejha l-poplu tagħna dejjem irrikorra u ittama biex teħilsu minn kull
mard, saram, niket, pesta, terremoti u gwaj ieħor. U allura ma nistgħux ma nħarsuhx dan il-Jum
tat-8 ta’ Settembru u nistennewh b’ħerqa kbira.
Din il-festa ma tistax ma tispikkax fost ħutha l-festi l-oħra għax ma
hix biss il-festa tax-Xagħrin, tan-Naxxarin, tas-Sengleani jew tal-Melliħin,
imma hija l-festa ta’ poplu sħiħ li mal-medda tas-snin għadda minn bosta gwerer
u tbatijiet, imma l-Bambina kienet dejjem hemm, sur qawwi u nvinċibbli. Lilha nbnewlha
tempji mill-isbaħ li fihom issaltan l-istatwa artistika tal-Bambina li toħroġ
ferħana fuq l-ispallejn f’jum il-festa fost l-isparar, iċ-ċapċip, id-daqq
tal-banda u l-logħob tan-nar.
Dan kollu sabiħ u
ta’ min jinkorraġġih; importanti wkoll
il-preżenza tagħna fil-knisja għal tant funzjonjiet sbieħ li jsiru ad unur
Ommna Marija fit-twelid tagħha. Nifirħu
għalenija fil-jiem tal-festa imma ħbieb nibqgħu qrib tagħha l-jiem kollha
tas-sena meta llum d-dinja tagħna qed tinħakem minn tant Materjaliżmu u Konsumiżmu. L-Ewropa bil-progress kollu tagħha donnha qed
taħseb li tgħaddi mingħajr Alla, iżda fejn Alla ngħata l-ġenb saltan il-kaos u
l-firda. Bosta drabi hija l-Omm tiegħu
li żżommlu driegħu biex ma jikkastiganiex, u allura ejjew ħbieb infittxu l-kenn
tal-Bambina biex tissokta tressaqna lejn l-Imgħallem Divin.

il-kitba tiegħi fl-okkażjoni tal-festa tat-Twelid tal-Verġni Mbierka għand
il-ġara taghna l-Mellieħa billi mill-ġdid nissellef il-versi tal-Poeta Dun Karm
Psaila li nsibu fis-sunett tiegħu Talba

Issa l-waqt; la tinsiex, Ommna Marija,
Li dejjem Int ħarist lill-gżejjer tagħna;

U ħaxken lil din l-art fix-xogħ’l medhija,

INTERVISTA MAL-POETA ACHILLE MIZZI
Minn fejn u meta twieled l-interess tiegħek fil-poeżija u
fil-kitba in ġenerali?
Jiena bdejt nikteb meta kelli xi sittax-il
sena u kont għadni qed nistudja. B'xorti tajba kelli għalliema li huma stess
kienu poeti tajbin... bħal Dun Frans Camilleri, Ġorg Zammit (ta' Wenzu u Rożi)
u oħrajn. Dawn kienu jispjegaw il-poeżija tant tajjeb li nisslu fija mħabba
għal-letteratura, li ma ħallietni qatt. Naturalment il-poeta jrid ikollu d-don
mitwieled miegħu biex jikteb. Barra minn hekk irid ikun immaġinattiv u
intellettwalment kreattiv. Irid ikun imkisser ukoll fis-sengħa tal-kitba,

Liema huma
dawk il-waqtiet, esperjenzi u ħwejjeġ li jispirawk?
It-temi
tal-poeżija tiegħi huma s-suġġetti filosofiċi li ħabbtu l-bnedmin tad-dinja
kollha mill-bidunett, talanqas dawk li għandhom moħħ biex jaħsbu. Il-bidu
tal-ħolqien, il-bidu tar-razza umana fuq wiċċ l-art, it-tnissil u t-twelid tal-individwu,
il-mewt tal-bniedem u tant u tant enimmi oħra li minkejja l-iżviluppi
tax-xjenza għadhom u jibqgħu jħabbtuna. Forsi l-akbar enimma hija l-istess
eżistenza ta’ Alla - li bih ħajjitna tista’ tidher imjassra u mxekkla imma li
mingħajru hija baħħ bla sens. Jien għadni nfittex u ngħarrex bħal ħafna mill-poeti,
mill-filosfi u mill-mistiċi ta’ qabli. L-istess tiftixa għal Alla hija fiha
nfisha att tal-fidi.
Fil-poeżija
ċċelebrajt il-misterji tal-ħajja li hija tant għanja fl-organiċità tagħha -
fejn kollox huwa inter-relatat. Parti minn din il-glorja tal-ħolqien u tal-ħajja
hija l-manifestazzjoni tax-xjenza u ta’l-iżviluppi teknoloġiċi tad-dinja
moderna.
Dwar
ix-xjenza forsi kont jien l-ewwel u
l-uniku esponent fil-poeżija Maltija. Tant hu hekk li Peter Serracini Inglott
f“Linji Ġodda” kien kiteb hekk fuq il-poeżija “Dawl”: Fost il-poeti l-ġodda, kien Achille Mizzi l-ewwel li fisser
b’oriġinalita` li tispikka mqar fil-kwadru tal-poeżija moderna dinjija
l-interess tal-bniedem tal-lum, imqanqal mill-kixfiet kbar tax-xjenza fil-Bidu
– il-bidu ta’l-Univers, il-bidu tal-ħajja, - il-bidu tal-bniedem (Fil-poeżija
ta’ Mizzi tinħass ukoll il-kuxjenza tal-kixfiet kbar tal-psikoloġija u
l-antropoloġija).
Id-dinja
moderna tax-xjenza mhux talli ppruvajt nifhimha imma talli għannejtha fil-bidu
tal-karriera tiegħi meta ħadd ma’ kien għadu
ħolom li jagħmel ħaġa bħal din
fil-poeżija Maltija.
Xi tgħid
dwar il-kompromess jew taħlita bejn imgħoddi u preżent fil-versi tiegħek?
Fir-realtà iż-żmien - l-imgħoddi, il-preżent
u l-ġejjieni, flimkien mal-ispazju, huma kunċett wieħed skond il-ħassieba
moderni. Aħna ngħixu f’dak li jissejjah spacetime continuum. Dan huwa kunċett li l-popli
tal-Andes għadhom iżommuh sal-lum
Jiena ngħid li mal-mixja taż-żmien il-bniedem
jgħaddi bħal f’ħolma minn tiġrib ta' ferħ u niket li jimmaturah u jbiddillu
l-atteġġjament tiegħu. Kull ma tmur il-vista tagħna dejjem izjed titwassa'
fil-perspettiva tagħha permezz tal-esperjenzi. Dan huwa bla dubju ta' xejn dak
li jirrendi l-poeżija aktar matura, profonda u nieqsa mis-superfiċjalità li wieħed
isib f’xi wħud mill-kittieba ta’ qabilna. Mistoqsija tremenda hija jekk din
l-esperjenza li qed inġarrbu ISSA għadx ikollha tmiem meta mmutu jew inkella
għadx titkompla wara l-mewt meta nitwaħħdu mill-ġdid man-natura.
Għal min
taħseb jappellaw il-versi tiegħek?
Il-versi tiegħi huma indirizzati għal kull min
għandu moħħ biex jifhem u japprezza...għal min għandu sensittività biex jaħseb u
jħobb dak li hu tajjeb u sabiħ. Biex inti tirċievi xbihat u messaġġi televiżivi
jrid ikollok ir-riċevitur meħtieġ. Aktar ma jkun sofistikat dan l-apparat aktar
il-messaġġ jolqtok u jissummak. Il-poeżija tiegħi hija msejsa fuq il-metafora
densa li hija l-bażi ta’ kull arti. Il-metafora tevoka fil-friegħi kollha
tal-arti ċerti ideat u esperjenzi imlewnin, irkaċċati u mkebbsin fuq iż-żnied
tal-paragun... tax-xebħ u tal-immaġinazzjoni
Min jaqra
l-poeżiji tiegħek jeħtieġ dizzjunarju (l-aktar il-ġenerazzjonijiet żgħażagħ)
għax fihom hemm l-użu tal-Malti semitiku xi drabi arkajku, drabi oħra element
qawwi tal-Malti li ġej mit-Taljan, anki erudit. Xi tgħid dwar dan?
Hija sfortuna kbira għan-nazzjon tagħna li
sezzjoni ġmielha miż-żagħżagħ Maltin qed jitilfu l-mezz tal-komunikazzjoni li
ħallewlna missirijietna. Jien ngħid għalija dik il-lingwa li nikteb biha hija
dik l-istess lingwa, sabiħa, pura u naturali li tawni ommi u missieri. Jekk
in-nies tal-lum tilfu ċerti idjomi u espressjonijiet li kellna f’żogħżitna
jfisser li l-ispektrum tal-esperjenzi
strettament Maltin qed jidjieq u jintilef. Jiena nħossni kburi għal kif
irnexxieli ħafna drabi nżewweġ l-element semitku u dak romanz u nagħmel minnhom
għodda artistika tal-ogħla espressjoni poetika.
Anki fuq
livell ta’ xbieha l-versi tiegħek mhumiex ċari jew sempliċi. Dan tqisu bħala
preġju (fis-sens li jippreżenta sfida għall-qarrej) jew difett (għax jistgħu
jgħajjew lil dak li jkun)?
Il-poeżija tiegħi hi dik li hi u ma tistax
tkun mod ieħor biex togħġob lill-qarrej. Hija ritratt perfett tal-karatturu u
l-kultura tiegħi. Dan ġej l-ewwel nett mill-fatt li nistinka biex il-metafora
tiegħi qatt ma tkun clichè imma
pjuttost friska u oriġinali b’tali mod li tolqot lil dak li jkun. Hemm imbagħad
ċerta kumplessità fin-nisġa tal-ħsieb. Nemmen bis-sħiħ li l-misterju u l-ambigwità
huma parti mill-istrateġija poetika. Dwar dan inkiteb volum sħiħ mill-poeta u
kritiku William Empson bl-isem SevenTypes
of Ambiguity. L-aqwa poeżija dejjem kienet dik li jkun fiha ħafna
sulari.Is-sublimi fil-poeżija joħroġ meta l-poeżija tkun għanja
fl-interpretazzjonijiet u fl-allużjonijiet. Dwar Shakespeare u Dante inktitbu u
għadhom jinkitbu volumi sħaħ fejn tiġi analizzata kważi kull kelma. Jiena
konxju li tkun ħasra meta l-komunikazzjoni ma sseħħx bejn il-kittieb u
l-qarrej. Hemmhekk niġu għall-problema tal-poeti ermetiċi bħal Ungaretti u Quasimodo li madankollu huma meqjuma fost l-aqwa poeti
fil-letteratura taljana tas-seklu għoxrin u l-aħħar wieħed fosthom rebaħ
saħansitra l-Premju Nobel.
Inti fost
dawk il-poeti moderni li għażlu jiktbu versi mirqumin u neqsin minn lingwaġġ oxxen, sensazzjonalist u
li jdarras bla ebda skop ulterjuri. Xi tgħid dwar din l-għażla tiegħek?
Qatt ma emmint f’mezz irħis bħall-oxxenità
biex inbiegħ lili nnifsi. Dan jgħodd wisq aktar meta l-awtur jinqabad biċ-ċar
li qed ideffes dawn l-elementi barra minn lokhom bħala pretest. Dan ma jfissirx
li f’ċerti poeżiji minn tiegħi ma kontx
senswali għall-aħħar. Imma pornografiku
ma kont qatt. Għannejt dak li Oliver Friggieri
sejjaħlu l-innu lis-senswalità u
l-poeżija tas-setgħat passjonali.Dan il-kritiku kbir ikompli jżid li
l-poeżija tiegħi...tinżel fis-saffi
tal-ispirtu bis-saħħa tal-istess senswalità. Jekk jitgħaqqdu ż-żewġ naħiet
l-iżjed imbiegħda ta’ din il-viżjoni, tista’ tinstab is-sintesi: il-profondità qaddisa
tas-senswalità, jew is-senswalità ta’ kull ma huwa fundamentali fl-eżistenza.
Kemm hu
apprezzat il-poeta f’pajjiżna? X’jista’ jsir biex il-poeta u l-poeżija
jingħataw spinta ’l quddiem f’pajjiżna?
Il-poeta mhux apprezzat kemm imissu jkun.
Ċertament l-istudju u l-apprezzament tal-poeżija qed jonqos minħabba diversi
fatturi, fosthom il-fatt li s-sillabu tal-iskejjel illum twessa’ u
l-letteratura, mhux tal-Malti biss, naqqset fl-importanza. Hemm ukoll enfasi
wisq akbar fuq ix-xjenzi naturali (fiżika, kimika eċċ) u fuq ix-xjenzi soċjali
(ekonomija, socjoloġija eċċ). Barra minn hekk hemm wisq distrazzjonijiet bħat-televiżjoni
u l-kompjuter li għamlu lill-bniedem passiv u għażżien.
Madankollu wieħed irid iżid li l-poeżija hija
mhux biss dik konvenzjonali, li nsibuha f’forma ta’ poeżija miktuba, imma wkoll
dik li naraw fil-films, fil-produzzjonijiet televiżivi, fil-kanzunetti u f’mitt
ħaġa oħra.
X'taħseb dwar l-opportunitajiet li joffri l-internet lil poeti
bħalek?
Bla ma nidher li qed
nikkontradiċi dak li għidt aktar ’il fuq dwar il-kompjuter ngħid li fl-internet
hemm sorsi wisq għanja dwar il-poeżija. Illum għandek mhux biss enċikolopediji
letterarji imma kampjunarju ta’ kull ma nkiteb mill-kbar tal-letteratura.
Għandek ukoll rivisti bla għadd dwar il-poeżija. Hemm faċilità wkoll biex
wieħed ikollu aċċess għall-istess għodod tal-kitba tal-poeżija bħalma huma
rimarji, teżawri ta’ kliem u fonti oħra ta’ ispirazzjoni bħalma ma huma web sites eċċ.
Inti għaraft ukoll il-ħtieġa li l-poeta Malti jkollu vrusu
maqlubin f’ilsna oħra? Xi tgħid dwar dan?
Minn qaddisu l-poeta jrid u
jixtieq li jxerred il-poeżiji tiegħu mal-erbat irjieħ. Jien dan għaraftu minn
kmieni u kienu bosta l-poeżija tradotti f’antoloġiji lokali u barranin kemm
bl-ingliż kif ukoll bit-taljan u bil franċiz. Madankollu jien kont dejjem
konxju tad-diffikultà biex insib nies kapaċi jittraduċi x-xogħol tiegħi b’mod
sodisfaċenti. Kien hemm drabi fejn m’għaraftx lili nnifsi fil-poeżiji tradotti.
F’każijiet oħra fejn it-traduttur kien kapaċi, xorta l-verżjoni tradotta kont
naraha mitruħa u bla ħajja. Kien għalhekk li ħtaft, meta nħolqot, l-opportunità
li jkolli lill-mibki Dun Peter Serracino Inglott li b’entużjażmu liema bħalu
medd għonqu għax-xogħol biex temm volum sħiħ ta’ traduzzjonijiet li jagħmel
ġieħ mhux biss lilu imma wisq iżjed lili.
Kif twieġeb lil min jgħid li Achille Mizzi hu poeta elitist?
Il-kelma ‘elitist’ fiha ħafna tifsiriet.
Jien sa neħodha li qed tirreferi
għall-fatt li l-poeżija tiegħi ma tantx hija aċċessibbli u ħafifa għal xi wħud
min-nies. M’hijiex il-poeżija rħisa li tiftiehem kif ġieb u laħaq minn kulħadd.
Il-poeżija tiegħi jew tħobbha jew tobgħodha. Hija poeżija retiċenti imma
daqstant ieħor hija profonda u stimulanti.
Hija poeżija li troddlok bil-mija fil-wieħed l-isforż li tkun għamilt
biex taqraha u tifhimha. F’ħafna każijiet il-kumpens ħafna drabi jkun moħbi u
jintradd bħal leħħa ta’ berqa li ddawwal u tagħti sodisfazzjon lill-menti
tiegħek. Biex idduq il-benna ta’ gandoffla trid titħabat biex tofroq il-qoxriet.
U dan li qed ngħid jgħodd għall-friegħi kollha tal-arti u l-letteratura. Hawn
min jidħol fil-katidral ta’ San Gwann daqs li kieku kien bla għajnejn, u billi
ma jkunx imeħejji bi sfond kulturali kif imiss, ma jsib xejn x’jolqtu u
x’jelevah. F’dak il-każ in-nuqqas ma jkunx fl-opra imma fl-ispettatur.
Li wieħed jimplika li jien poeta
elitist ma tkiddni xejn għax naf li l-opra poetika tiegħi hija frott ta’ viżjoni
intima, u bħala tali għandha tinqara minn min għandu t-tħejjija meħtieġa biex
jista’ japprezza testi bħal dawn. Lanqas m’għandu xogħli jiġi ġġudikat biss
minn poeżija waħda, imma għandu jitqies u jinqara fl-intier tiegħu bħala korp
ta’ xogħol organiku.
Kollox ma kollox jien nistabar li
ġejt dejjem milqugħ bl-akbar approvazzjoni mill-kritiċi kollha minkejja li jien
qatt ma mbuttajt lili nnifsi b’pubbliċità żejda. U dan jgħodd saħansitra
għall-ewwel poeżiji li wrejt lill_Professur Aquilina meta kelli biss xi
tmintax-il sena, Xogħli dejjem intlaqa’ b’superlattivi – ħaġa li lili hennietni
u għamlitli ħila ta’sur. Huwa biżżejjed
li niġi apprezzat minn min jifhimni għax wara kollox għandi sens qawwi
tal-frugħa tal-fama u naf li f’din
il-ħajja kollox huwa għaddien. Għalija huwa biżżejjed apprezzament bħal dak li
kien għaddieli l-Profesur Oliver Friggieri, l-aqwa kritiku tal-letteratura
Maltija “F’għadd ta’ sensi Mizzi hu
l-werriet denn ta’ Dun Karm; il-versi tiegħu huma sottilment, sikwit, żviluppi
maturi u kisbiet tipiċi tal-poeta nazzjonali. Il-klassiċità miksuba
romantikament minn Dun Karm hi hawnhekk imġedda u adattata għal qagħdiet u
ambjenti poetiċi differenti”.
X’jagħmel
Achille Mizzi meta ma jkunx okkupat bil-poeżija u l-kitba? Proġetti
għall-ġejjieni?
Għalkemm nagħtiha importanza kbira, il-kitba
propja tal-poeżija ftit teħodli ħin minn ħajti. Wisq aktar ngħaddi ħin naqra, nixtarr,
nisma’ u nġarrab internament l-avventura tal-eżistenza. Ħbieb kbar tieħi huma
l-letteratura, l-arti u l-mużika, speċjalment dik klassika. Imbagħad niddelitta
wkoll nimxi ħdejn il-baħar u fil-kampanja u ngawdi l-ambjent ta’ madwari.
Għalkemm in-nies inħobbhom ma niddejjaq xejn ingawdi s-solitudni. Bħal Ċiċerun
intenni li “Qatt ma nkun inqas waħdi, daqs meta nkun waħdi” (Nisi
solum, quam solum esset. De officis 3.1).
Illum li nħossni qisni l-patrijarka Abram, imdawwar b’erba’ wlied u
tmien neputijiet, intaffi ftit mit-toqol tas-snin li għandi billi ngawdi l-kumpannija
tagħhom, meta dawn ikunu jistgħu jiġu jżuruna.

your poems?

Ecological disorder, environmental pollution, emotional exploitation, discrimination, suffering, nature, life, love,
death, friendship etc are the main
themes of my
poems. The capital idea of my
writings is to
arouse literary sensation
to Tom, Dick and
Harry across the
globe. The social hypocrisy,
exploitation,
deforestation, dehumanization
etc. are the main
contents of my
creative world.

are the reasons
that cultivated your
spirit towards the
poetic world?
AKC:
Poetry is my
passion and it
germinates and grows
as naturally as
the child to
a mother. It is
the result of
the inner urges
that takes shape
in black and
white. The suffering society ,
the paling pauper
, discrimination, exploitation , humiliation , emotional
exploitation , and natural
disaster are
the things that not only
haunt my mind
time and again, but
also stir to support
the deprived voices against
these evil
forces. Creation needs neither norms
nor privileges.
It germinates
every where in
all circumstances .

AKC: Nature is the universal code of conduct
and all human
beings must honour
and
embrace it for
the sake of better
future of our peeping generations. It is Nature that sends the musers in the seventh
heaven for the ecological
music on this ailing
earth where tempestuous
wind of the materialistic
nebulosity overwhelms the human
beings. The sun spins a yarn of Darwin .
The starry fays
stirs the mays for gala
days. The sun is the stallion while
the moon is the
matron. The staring
spring, wintry cheese, summer’s honey
breath, menstrual flood
etc are the
things that tickle
my poetic heart
for literary sensation
in life. Natural sanctity
is the prime
wealth of this
world and all
living beings are
the adopted child
of nature.
Q.4.NDR: What
is the philosophy
of your life ?What
is the ultimate goal
of your poetic
life? Explain in few lines.
AKC :
Life that is
the blossomed flower
is ever
beautiful and fragrant. The main motive
of my life is to spread
the message of peace,
brotherhood and friendship
amidst all living
beings on
this ailing earth. Secondly, to arouse the world through
my creative works
is the part and
parcel of my life. Thirdly, the proper
utilization of the
precious time for the sake of
the common masses is the part
of my life.
Poetry is my passion
in life. As a
result I try
my best to
spread the
fragrance of my
poetic garden for Tom, Dick
and Harry. In a nutshell I
want to see
life spiritually prosperous
and divine amidst
the stormy earthly
winds blowing across
the continent.
Q.5.NDR: What is your
philosophy of suffering ?Give your comment if any.
AKC :Tribulation is
a curse for
them who believe
in the carpe
diem theory. The treasury
of the misery
is an infantry for the
corking time of the
sophistry. Suffering is the
spiritual vision of the
saintly life for
the exploration of
the new vistas
of knowledge. God is
a saving grace
for those burning
in furnace. Struggle is
life, idleness is death.
“Paupers are not the time’s fool,
But
time’s best jewel.
The
palmy days of life
Is the felicity of
strife.”(My Songs, p.26)
Q6. NDR: What
is your concept
of Love? Elaborate
it.
AKC :Love is the
spiritual feeling of the living
beings that lies in pure
heart and sound
mind. It is the
fragrance of life
that blooms only
in perfect psyche. The immortal love episode of Radha and Krishna , Sita and Ram, Laila
and
Majnu, Heer and Rangha and many others
spread the fragrance of the love’s nectar for the generations
next to them. Love
is the jewel
of the amative,
for the amative
and by the
amative. It is
universal gift for
all living beings
in general and
human beings in
particular that sends
only in the
seventh heaven. Modern
men are deeply
influenced from the
power of wealth,
money and ego.
People seek love
in women, in
wealth and in
sheath of the
sword. Those human
beings who are
really in love
love whole beings
of the
earth . The climax
of love lies
in spiritual union
with the divine.
The sensuous pleasure,
lust for wealth,
the world of
earth hunger and
marriage try its
best to robe
the beauty of
love on the
name of Love .
Those who are
in love are
the most lucky
men of this
world. Here is a rhymed quatrain
that spreads
the fragrance of the spiritual
love.
“ The incense
of Mary’s sight
Is a vital
feelings of delight
Over the fatal
feelings of delight
For the embroidered
Knight.”(Love,p.46)

do you consider
better capital idea or
style ?
AKC:
Capital idea is
the bride and
style is her
ornaments that enhances
the blooming beauty
to its climax.
Style is to
enhance the poetic
beauty of the
capital idea the
poet implies in
the poems. Style may
change, but capital
idea needs sensation
rather than alteration .

What does literature
mean to you ?
Do you think
it has relevance to
our day to day lives ?
Does it have
anything to do
with all that
is happening around
us.
AKC: Literature
is the call
of nature for
the florescence of
the humanity on
this strife-stricken earth.
It is to
fire the imagination of
Tom, Dick
and Harry in
general and poetry
lovers in particular for
the divine message
of universal brotherhood and
tranquility. Literature is
the soul of
my fleshy life
that keeps me
ever in the
seventh heaven. The
poetic paysage shapes
the materialistic fellows
for the spiritual message
of the sages.
It reflects not
only the ups
and downs of
the day today
lives but also
stirs the spirits for
spiritual sanctity. It
is only the
literary world through
which the shaping
spirits frame of
minds of all
those suffering from
viper thoughts for
a counsel of
perfection.
The pulp
literature that spreads
like wild fire
gives heart failure
to the sensitive
souls. It is
also one of
the root cause
of the immorality
of the existing generation across
the globe.
Q9. NDR: What
is the purpose
of your creative works?
AKC:
Creation unlocks
the mystery of
the universe that
is the most precious
wealth of the
society. Creation goes on as
naturally as the
fragrance to the
flower. All poetical devices
are secondary. The intense joy
that the creator enjoys goes over the head of the critic and
the general readers. This ecstasy can be
realized, not expressed in
black and white. To
sooth the ailing
hearts through the
crack of Nature’s
lock is the
main motto of
my poetry . It is clearly
sung here :
“To unlock
Nature’s lock
Is the wisecrack
Of the flock.”(The Poet,p.12 )
Q10. NDR: How do you comment upon the mythical
characters of your
poems?
AKC :I have
gone through western
mythical world in
general and Greek and Roman
in particular. I have been reading
about Indian mythical
and historical heroes/heroines from
my childhood. The Indian and
western mythical characters
bloom side by side across
my poetic grove. All
these mythical characters
enrich my poetic
beauty to a
great extent. I am
indebted to all
these Indian and
western classical writers
who added fuel to my creative
flames for the
poetic perfection in
life.
Q.11. NDR: How do you rate the present day poetry/ fiction?
AKC :
Creative writings has
come of age
now a days
because Indian English
poets in general
and novelists in
particular have established their
credit at the global
level though they
are deprived of
required privileges in
comparison with their
western counterparts. However,
Indian English writing
has to do
a lot for
its upgradation, globalization and
perfection.
Q12.NDR: What
are the most tormenting things
for Indian English writers?
AKC :
Surprisingly government aided
statuary bodies such
as The UGC, Sahitya Academy,
and many others
take little interest
in helping the
peeping poets/writers nor
can they arrange
proper platform for
assessment of them.
Q.13.NDR: How
do you react
about North Eastern
Indian English Writers ?
AKC: North-
East India has
produced a galaxy
of English writers – Mitra Phukan ,
Mamang Dai, Dhruba
Hazarika, Ananya S Guha, Rupanjali
Baruah, B.R.Barman, Temsula Ao, T.
Bijay Singh, Hare Krishna
Deka, Bipin Patsani,
and many more.
Penguin, Rupa , and Harper
Collins have published
many of them,
but they are
little known in
the popular psyche
of the masses
inside and outside
region . Even North –East based
Universities take little
notice of their own
sons/daughters of the
soil so far
curriculum is concerned . North –Eastern English
Writers are the
most neglected voices
of this region.
Q.14.NDR:Can
you claim that
natural beauty is
blooming in this
N.E. Region ?
AKC: North
–Eastern Region is
the heaven of the
earth so far
natural beauty is
concerned that blooms
beyond vision.
Unfortunately this heavenly
land is bleeding
due to terrorism,
regionalism and demographical disorder .
Q15. NDR: What
is The Satra ? What
is its significance ?
AKC :
The Satra is
the pious place
for Vaishnavite cult
and centre of
wisdom in Assam
in general and
Majuli in particular. To propagate
the message of universal
brotherhood amidst all
living beings of
this planet is
the message of
all Satras. It is
mandatory for all
living Bhagats (monks) to
remain ever bachelor
so long they
are in the Satras.
However there are
few Satras that
allow the Bhagats
to do double
duty at a
time. It is also
memorable that nuns
( female priests) are not
allowed to observe
their duties as
the nuns in
the Satras.
Q16.NDR: Quote
a quatrain that
brings out your
autobiographical materials?
AKC: ‘The Ganga ’ is one
of my best
autobiographical poems. Here
is an autobiographical quatrain:
“The Ganga 's odour
Is a good humour
For the Vidur
Of
Sirajpur.”(Nature Poems,p.23)
Q.17. NDR: Some
critics call you
Indian Keats? How can
you justify it ?
AKC: I am
neither critics’s critic
nor Indian Keats.
Romantic elements in
general and Keats’
in particular run
throughout my poetic
veins that makes
my poems fragrant
worldwide. My poetic
heart lies in
romantic rather than
classical world.
Q18. NDR: Some
critics call you
a phrasal king in English
poetry. Give an example
if any:
AKC: I
have nothing to
do with phrasal
king or queen.
But the phrasal
words are found
in plenty across
my poetic works
besides compound, explored,
proverbial and mythical
words. Here is a quatrain
in which three
phrases are wreathed
artistically.
“The fancy
work
Is a high water
mark
For the donkey work
Of the shirk.”(Love,p.20)
Q.19. NDR: Do
you have a
specific writing style?
What is your
innovative style ? Give an
example of it.
AKC:
Rhymed verse is
my favorite poetic
style. However, you can
find many of
my poems in
free verse too.
Apart from rhymed
verses there are a
number of other
poetic qualities such
as plenty of
the phrasal words, and
the proverbial sentences,
mythical blending, compound
words and many
others all through
my poetic grove. To
maintain the ascending
order of the
alphabets in a
stanza is my
innovative racy style
across my poetic
works.
“The liven
moon
Is the
noon
For the
osculation
Of the
helion.” (Nature,P.23)
The ascending
order of l
(liven)-m (moon)-n (noon)-o
(osculation) in a
quatrain is my
explored style to
the literary world. Here
is a stanza
that is quoted
from ‘The Poet’ (2011) :
“ The enigma, facetiae and
genre
Heal the
infidel’s conjecture
That enrich
the oeuvre
Of the
father- figure.” (The Poet,p.43)
One can
find the sequence
of the alphabet-
e, f, g, h and I in a
single stanza besides
the rhymed quatrain.
Q.20.NDR: What
has been the
response from readers
and reviewers so
far to your
poetry collections are
concerned?
AKC: I got
myself interviewed for
21 literary journals
and anthologies besides
more than 100
criticisms and reviews
published on my poems
in journals, books, websites and
anthologies by prominent
poets, professors, philosophers and
critics. Is it
good or no?
I do not
know.
Q.21.NDR:As a writer, do you see
yourself belonging to some tradition ?
AKC :Creation
rarely invites categorization or literary
similarity nor is
it mandatory to be in the
line of some
traditions / movements of writings.
Majority of my poems
are in meter, but few
of them are
also in free-verse.
I don’t want
to be the
mere puppets of
the writers writing
in any styles
now a days.
However
I leave the answer
of this question
for the critics
who will go
through all my
works and will
assess of belonging
if any.
Q.22.NDR:How
do you paint
the contemporary political
scenario ? How much do you expect from
them for literary
prosperity?
AKC:
You can
take an example
of our modern
leader who is the product
of caste, creed
and compromise. Everyone can
enjoy his/her caricature
described in my poem ‘Leader’. What can one expect more
from such sorts
of people?
A wolf in sheep’s clothing
Sheds crocodile tears for the suffering.
O Blood sucker of the sufferer!
Your name is Leader.(My Songs,p.18)
Q.24.NDR: Do
you have any
advice for other
writers?
AKC:
The writers are expected to
be impersonal while
dealing with the
subjects and harsh
critical comments. They
must be true
to their inordinate
passion of writing.
Ignore comments of
those who lack
proficiency in their
respective fields. Be
voracious reader and
highly sensitive. Fortune will
embrace your poetic potion;
if writing becomes
your passion rather
than profession.
